Commander's Brew Episode 264: Verazol, the Split Current

Verazol1

This week's deck is all about the classic Kicker mechanic and taking advantage of some templating/rules we're seeing for the first time in Zendikar Rising. If you're like me you took a look at Verazol, the Split Current, and thought: "How many Kicker instant and sorceries worth playing in EDH could there possibly be?". The answer is, not that many. But thanks to that new mechanic, Verazol actually allows you to copy ANY spell. Meaning that permanent spells on the stack can get copied, and enter the battlefield as token copies!

Verazol wants us to copy all these Kicker spells and make copies of them and rinse and repeat and WIN! So first things first, we'll need some ramp and +1/+1 counters, so cards like Grow from the Ashes, Everflowing Chalice, and Inscription of Abundance just make a ton of sense. Also, we've finally found a home for Elfhame Druid in Commander!

Once you're set-up, Verazol will love to cast the best Kicker spells like Rite of Replication or Wolfbriar Elemental. As Foretold should help you when casting these spells, making it so you'll eventually only need to pay the Kicker cost.

Verazol is actually unique in another way! The mana you spend on Verazol is how many counters it gets, meaning that if you don't pay the X cost at all and just use UG, you'll still get a 2/2. Plus the Commander tax is taken into account here so any tax will also result in extra counters, so Big V scales extremely well with the game.

Finally, some sleeper cards in this deck that totally overperform are Roalesk, Apex Hybrid, and Twinning Staff so make sure you've got a good play lined up when you see them!
