Hello and welcome to another article from CommandBeacon.com this time featuring a couple more Mono-coloured decks. Today we will be going over two of the most famous characters from Magic Lore: Urza and Yawgmoth. Both of these creatures came into full fruition as legendary creatures cards for Commander during the release of the Modern Horizons set.

They have been part of Magic's history for so long it's just thrilling to be able to play with them as Commanders. This is especially true considering how high of a power level they are at. Both are mythic rare, 4 mana humans with high value and lots of synergies with plenty of lines of play even though they are mono-coloured. There are some strategies for these two that stand out the most and we'll go over them in the decks below so let's take a look. 

 

 

Urza, Lord High Artificer

Urza, Lord High Artificer is an incredible creature with multiple amazing abilities. His enter the battlefield creates an artifact construct token with power and toughness equal to your artifact count. The construct can then be used immediately to generate blue mana with Urza along with all other artifacts you control. It gets quite strange when you start tapping equipment and artifacts with static effects for mana but it's really effective. Lastly is his ability as a mana sink. Try your luck by spending extra mana to exile a card off the top and play without paying its mana cost, or maybe even just combo off and cast your whole deck.

That's enough gushing over Urza since as a card he's been proven formidable in multiple decks, formats, and strategies. The deck itself is by no surprise to anyone an artifact-based strategy using and abusing Urza and the synergies he provides. This decklist has multiple ways to gain infinite mana, infinite turns, and unlimited draw power, see if you can spot them all. It's difficult to describe this deck further than a pure value artifact control deck with a combo or beatdown finish.

Yawgmoth, Thran Physician

The ability to Proliferate is a popular one since its inception in the Scars of Mirrodin block and it's return in the War of the Spark set. Yawgmoth, Thran Physician is a prime example of showing off how to abuse this ability with all sorts of different counters, from loyalty counters to poison counters. As a creature, he is a sacrifice outlet, a draw engine, a discard engine and removal with a touch of protection. With enough resources and the proper setup, Yawgmoth will overwhelm your opponents and make it difficult for them to deal with everything coming at them.

This deck contains so many synergies and a good number of finishers as well, which don't need Yawgmoth to run but benefit from his draw engine. It's a very heavy resource management strategy, taking creatures, cards, and life from your opponents while making sure you have plenty. Even Mono-blacks mana doublers and accelerators such as Crypt Ghast and Cabal Coffers put you ahead in terms of mana. There is a solid reanimator package and subtheme of Liliana Planeswalkers in here as well for fun, but with Yawgmoth's Proliferate they have the potential to use their ultimate the same turn they come into play. I can't begin to express how surprised I was at how versatile and resilient this deck was, so take a look for yourself so you can see what I mean.
