Zendikar Commanders Rising: Moraug, Fury of Akoum
Here is a list of the brutal mythic legendary minotaur warrior from Zendikar Rising. Moraug is a solid 6/6 for six mana with an extra combat Landfall ability and additional power for every time a creature you control has attacked. The potency of Landfall abilities has been discussed heavily as playing a land is a special action that doesn’t use the stack making it near impossible to interact with. They made sure to make Moraug only triggers during the main phase and doesn't grant additional main phases. However, it’s plenty deadly without it.
This variation of the deck is to build a solid heavy-hitting value board. Some choices have been left out for its higher potential if this strategy was to go wide and deadly. I wanted to smash life totals with Moraug. Seven power is a magic number in Commander as three shots take out an opponent with Commander damage. Moraug's first ability puts it at seven power, then eight, then nine if you happen to have that many combat phases, which with a fetch land is pretty achievable. If you can start off with another three power though it’s a quick two-shot with ten damage then eleven damage. It’s a mono-red deck so why not just try to smash as hard as possible. Fiery Emancipation triples the damage so Moraug has the potential to one-shot an opponent for twenty-one damage.
I haven’t run this many panoramas in a deck for ages. There are a bunch of neat tricks for this deck and I honestly think this may be one of my permanent decks to keep in one piece. Just don’t think too hard about things. Ramp a bit, play your lands, smash face, and enjoy
