Commander Mondays: Competitive Mono-Black Control

For this week's article, I've decided to bring another one of my old favourites out of the cupboard. This week I'm discussing my old deck list for Xiahou Dun, The One-Eyed.

The title basically explains how the deck plays, it uses hand hate, creature removal, and "stax" effects to make the game miserably unplayable for the opponent. Xiahou Dun was chosen as the general for this deck due to his ability to recycle any useful card you need. Another common choice is Sidisi, Undead Vizier, though I have not tried her out yet myself.

The Game Plan

This deck practically plays itself, throwing hate card after hate card at the opponent as fast as you can tap your lands. It's meant for a one-on-one setting however, so I can't say this build will be as effective in multiplayer.

Your opening hand should consist of at least two lands (or one and some mana rocks), a hand hate spell or Sinkhole and some sort of card draw. Having Necropotence or a tutor in hand usually is enough to secure the game. With Xiahou Dun being used to recur tutors, you can usually play around any sort of problems your opponents throw at you.

Some of the trickier cards to play with properly are Nether Void and Ad Nauseum. But in the case other Nether Void, you can use Cavern of Souls or Boseiju, Who Shelters All to get around the tax effect.

Last thing to note, Smokestack and Liliana of the Dark Realms are best friends.

After all is said and done, you can win the game with a hefty Consume Spirit, or with beatdown from Faerie tokens or Xiahou Dun.

The Deck List

Thanks for reading, and have a great week. Next week I'm going to start cooking something up with Eldritch Moon spoilers!
