Welcome all to the Strixhaven Ultimate Guide to Limited. In Chapter one I’m going to be focusing on the cards you see the most in your booster packs, commons. Strixhaven Commons are different from most sets with there being a ton of multicolour commons. I’ll be looking at some of the best commons from each colour, but each of the five colleges will have some strong commons that you'll want to be playing with whether in a college assigned tw0-colour combination or a three-colour mix.

Here are some of the best commons from Strixhaven that you'll want to be looking out for when building your first Sealed deck for Prerelease or drafting this sweet new set.

Defend the Campus

Defend the Campus – I don’t usually like go wide combat tricks but having this available in a spell that can also be used as an instant removal card is just too good to pass up.

Guiding Voice

Guiding Voice – I love this Learn spell as it only costs one mana and allows you to search for your best Lesson. With that Lesson, you can trigger Magecraft twice in one turn as well.

Star Pupil

Star Pupil – A creature that can move its power in +1/+1 counters over to another creature when it dies. This can gain more value with the multitude of cards in the set that add +1/+1 counters to creatures.

Pop Quiz

Pop Quiz – This instant Divination nets you two cards at instant speed for only three mana. One of them could be the Lesson you need to help you out in the game as well.

Hunt for Specimens

Hunt for Specimens – Pest creatures are important to the Witherbloom. This'll get you a creature to block or sacrifice, while gaining you life and getting you a Lesson from your sideboard.

Mage Hunters' Onslaught

Mage Hunters’ Onslaught – Common blanket removal spells are so powerful and this one only costs four mana instead of the usual five. You might even get some bonus life loss for your opponent.

Igneous Inspiration

Igneous Inspiration – Even at instant speed, this damage spell that can hit any target, also replaces itself by helping you search out a Lesson.

Blood Researcher

Blood Researcher – There are just so many ways for Witherbloom to gain life in this set, that this creature is bound to gain a +1/+1 counter almost every turn.

Eureka Moment

Eureka Moment – This is no Growth Spiral but you're still going to get both card advantage and ramp out of this spell at instant speed.

Infuse with Vitality

Infuse with Vitality – This allows you to trade up in combat, get your creature back and gain two life. All this for only two mana. If you have a creature with an enter the battlefield trigger you can gain even more value.

Needlethorn Drake

Needlethorn Drake – I love me some deathtouch creatures. This one has flying on top of deathtouch allowing you to block most all creatures for a nice favourable combat trade.

Biblioplex Assistant

Biblioplex Assistant – This gives you a colourless flying creature that can be put in any deck and allows you to get the best instant or sorcery you’ve cast so far back on top of your library, ready to draw again.

Letter of Acceptance

Letter of Acceptance – Colourless mana fixing is always a powerful thing. You get the extra value of being able to sacrifice it to draw a card later in the game if you don’t need the mana anymore.

Campus Cycle

Any of the dual land Campuses – These are better than the average common dual lands. The ability to Scry 1 later in the game will help your card selection for those long games.

I hope that this list of common cards can help you navigate the tough deck choices for Limited play. No matter what college you choose, you will need to make sure you know the best cards from top to bottom, mythic to common. Remember that winning a game of Limited starts with the cards you will see the most often, the commons. Thanks again for reading the Daily Dose of Strixhaven. Head over to chapter two of the Strixhaven Ultimate Guide to Limited as I continue with my look at the best uncommons for Strixhaven Limited and Prerelease play.
