Meet the Mechanics of your doom, SPIDERMAN!

From the edge of the multiverse, through the Spiderverse, let’s Planeswalk into a new realm of endless possibilities… as long as all those possibilities involve arachnid-themed costumes in some way, shape, or form.

But, with a whole new multiverse of possibilities comes a new slew of mechanics for you to master and to guide you through what’s hip and new here comes the Tower crew!

…Too much?

Connive

Last seen in Modern Horizons 3, Connive is a mechanic suited for the superior intellect of a villain such as Doctor Otto Octavius - and one that feels right at home with the Rogue’s Gallery of the Spiderverse.

Doc Ock's Henchmen

Or, at the very least Doctor Otto Octavius’ henchmen.

After all, what’s a good supervillain without a bit of conniving?

Creatures with Connive cause you to draw a card, then discard a card. If the card you discarded was a non-land, then your creature’s devious conniving has gone off without a hitch and they gain a +1/+1 counter to CRUSH that pesky SPIDERMAN!

Mayhem

And you know what follows some successful villainous conniving?

That’s right…

MAYHEM.

An ability that lets you cast that discarded non-land for a reduced cost.

Yes, just because a villain is defeated doesn’t mean that they’re not a threat! Just like Soloman Gr- Wait, wrong franchise. Just like how Marvel cast Mayhem upon the Spiderman franchise with  a certain comic revival that none of us like to think about but I’m bringing up just to twist the knife a little bit (SUFFER, HEROES!), your villainous Mayhem means that your creatures can strike back from the GRAVE… yard. Back from the graveyard.

Modified

From robotic arms to mechanical web slingers to magic spells to the classic super suit, there’s no shortage of ways to modify one’s self in this Marvelous (ha) world of capes.

Modified is a mechanic that is returning from Kamigawa Neon Dynasty. A card that is “modified” is affected in some way by an outside source. Cards with auras, equipment, or counters are all considered to be “modified”, and in turn auras, equipment, and counters are all considered “modifications”.

Certain cards care about other cards being modified, and might modify themselves in turn.

Does the word “modify” mean anything to you anymore?

Modal Double-Faced Cards

With great power comes great responsibility… And great dangers.

Which is why any cape worth their salt has a secret identity… well unless your name happens to be “Steve Rogers”, “Tony Stark”, “Thor”, “Luke Cage”, or… Well, ok, but lots of capes still have secret identities, which continues to be true in the Spiderman set.

There's two-faced, and then there's TWO-FACED.

As with other double faced modal cards, you choose which side of the card you want to cast; unlike other double faced modal cards, one side of the card has an ability to transform into the other!

But beware, once you put on the mask, you can’t take it back off. When you assume the mantle of responsibility, there’s no going back…

The Soul Stone

Unless one were to control the VERY FABRIC OF LIFE AND DEATH ITSELF, that is.

Speaking of great power and responsibility, The Soul Stone has the potential to carry immense power that comes with sacrifice. When played for its initial cost, The Soul Stone is little more than a mana rock. But, once you use its second ability, for six and one Black Mana, at the cost of exiling one creature you may now harness the soulstone.

Once you have harnessed it, you may return one creature from your graveyard to the battlefield at the beginning of your Upkeep Step each turn. Forget conniving, forget responsibility, with The Soul Stone in your corner death is merely a turn-long setback…

But wait, there’s more!

Webslinging

A reduced cost with which you can cast a creature by returning another creature to your hand - imagine spiderman pulling someone out of danger, or pulling something back to swing into the scene.

Just, it doesn’t change the speed at which you can cast a spell so you mostly can’t use it to save a creature from getting trampled by an opponent’s Goyf.

Mostly
