Take Your Game to the Edge!

Edge of Eternities: A Look at What's New!

Following on the success of Final Fantasy, we now head into the ‘final frontier’ with Edge of Eternities taking us to the edge of the universe and outer space! A truly exciting new set of in-universe Magic the Gathering with some great new cards, mechanics and abilities to take your game right to the edge!

Spacecraft and Station

Space is vast, and planet hopping requires transportation, so luckily this set includes a new artifact sub-type: Spacecraft.  Spacecrafts come in different sizes shapes and capabilities as you might expect; such as warships, freighters, cruisers, and more!

So how do Spacecraft work?  Each Spacecraft begins as an artifact, but most can become artifact creatures by tapping another untapped creature you control to add charge counters equal to that creature’s power to the Spacecraft to activate its “Station” ability.  This ability can only be activated at sorcery speed during a main phase.

Once the number of charge counters on the Spacecraft is equal to or greater than the number indicated in the circle on the left side of its text box, it becomes a creature with the power and toughness indicated on the right side. It also has any abilities that are listed in the lower text box area. For example, if Warmaker Gunship has only five charge counters on it, it's not a creature and it doesn't have flying. Once it gets its sixth charge counter, it becomes a 4/3 artifact creature with flying.

It is important to note that not every Spacecraft becomes a creature once they are fully “Stationed”.  Some Spacecraft don’t have power and toughness indicated and therefore do not become creatures when stationed.  Instead they may only receive the activated abilities listed in the lower text box.

A Note About Commander: Spacecrafts & Vehicles

With the release of Edge of Eternities comes a change to the rules for the Commander Format of Magic the Gathering.  Legendary Vehicles and legendary Spacecrafts with a printed power and toughness are eligible to be your deck's commander. That’s all that is really changing in that regard, be sure to follow all the rules regarding colour identity (or colourless) as you construct your deck as this rule still applies.

Planet

Planet is a new non-basic land type. A Planet doesn't have any specific rules or functionality tied to it, but a Planet can have the Station ability, although it won’t become a creature it will have an activated ability that triggers once it’s fully stationed.

Warp

Warp is an alternative casting cost. If you cast a card with warp from your hand, you may choose to pay its warp cost (usually less than it’s normal casting cost)  rather than its full mana cost. If you do, you'll exile the card at the beginning of the next end step.  It’s considered a “warped card”.  Once this warped card is exiled, you can cast it from exile on a later turn for its full casting cost.

Warp appears mainly on creatures, but is found amongst all permanent card types. The advantage to casting a card for its warp cost is to get an enter the battlefield (ETB) effect or condition to resolve quicker or for a single instance earlier in the game. Casting a card with Warp is only usable from your hand, you can’t warp the card again when you cast it fro exile later. Just remember that either way the casting cost for the card rules wise refers to its full casting cost NOT its Warp cost, regardless of how or when it is cast. Trust me it’s simpler than it sounds.

Void

Void abilities may grant alternative, improved, additional, or trigged effects to a creature or spell. This happens “if a non-land permanent left the battlefield this turn or if a spell was warped this turn.”  Void mmay appear on instants, sorceries, creatures, and other permanents.  It’s important to note that the Void ability doesn’t care whose non-land permanent or warp effect triggered it; just that the conditions were met.

Lander Tokens

The Lander Token has made its way into MTG.  A Lander Token is a colourless artifact token with “2 Tap, Sacrifice this token: Search your library for a basic land card, put it onto the battlefield tapped, then shuffle."  There are plenty of cards in the set that create Lander Tokens so stock up on them!
